How do we calculate bike path distances?

We put another approx. 3.6 miles on the other day doing errands. I say approx. b/c Google maps ignores my request to travel on bike paths! Grr...any suggestions would be helpful. Dave says I need to get an odometer - is that what it's called? I feel like I wouldn't trust it. And how much does that cost anyway? This quest to use the bike was to save money! We're hoping to ride to church this morning, we'll see...

Well if you're going near a road, you could just calculate the way you would drive. Otherwise I would just get it as close as possible on Google maps and then estimate what part you didn't drive.

30 miles - I'm impressed!

Does it really matter? Would it be a failure if you overestimated your miles and actually only went 90 this summer? My guess is that you will underestimate more often than you overestimate. So, you'll probably hit 110 about the time you think you're hitting 100.

But, if you are looking for an odometer, try Freecycle. Our city also has a Craigslist, now. So, someone might be selling one on there.

On Google Maps, click on 'My Maps' and 'Create New Map'. Then you can draw lines and it will calculate the length. The lines don't snap to roads, so you have to add all the turns in yourself, but that will also allow you to draw lines on bike paths.
